Our scrub story

Founded in 2009 by Dr Abigail Moore, a passionate paediatric dentist, and Daniel Plewman, an expert in high-stress environments, Happythreads emerged from a shared vision. Abigail sought comfortable and stylish scrubs, while Daniel aimed to foster a positive company culture focused on well-being and collaboration.

Starting in a spare room, where Daniel balanced work and family life, Happythreads has grown into one of the largest dedicated scrub suppliers in the UK and Ireland. Today, we proudly employ over 25 dedicated team members across three locations, committed to making every healthcare professional feel unique and valued in their uniforms.

Insights from our founder: Daniel Plewman

To celebrate our anniversary, we spoke with Daniel about the evolution of Happythreads:

How has Happythreads evolved over the past 15 years?

Fifteen years ago, it was just me in a spare room. A year later, our first baby arrived, and I had to move into our first warehouse. Since then, we’ve changed locations multiple times as we’ve grown, now operating with a team of 25.

What significant lessons have you learned?

Recruiting the right people and engaging with the team is crucial. As the team grows, maintaining personal connections becomes more challenging but remains vital to our culture.

Can you share a memorable moment from the past 15 years?

COVID was a turning point. We sold out all our stock within six weeks and struggled to replenish it. We sourced stock locally and even manufactured our own scrubs, prioritising our loyal customers while limiting sales to prevent speculators from buying out our inventory.

How has company culture evolved?

Coming from a construction background, I wanted to eradicate aggressive practices. At Happythreads, we’ve built a culture where everyone’s views are respected, fostering an inclusive environment where no one feels humiliated.

What advice would you give to new entrepreneurs?

Once you’ve tested your business model, believe in your plan. There will be many reasons to stop, and you’ll face plenty of challenges, but determination is key to pushing through.

What recent innovations excite you the most?

We’ve transitioned our embroidery in-house, allowing for faster turnarounds and higher quality. Additionally, we’re excited about our new website and warehouse management system, which will propel us to the next level.

What are your goals for the next five years?

We aim to expand into new countries and further develop our markets in Ireland, France, and the UK, while continuously improving employee welfare.

What qualities do you value most in your team?

I value teamwork and respect. It’s essential that everyone works together harmoniously and appreciates each other’s opinions.

How has customer feedback influenced our products?

Customer feedback is vital. We’re fortunate to receive valuable insights, which help us adapt and align our offerings with customer desires.

What message would you like to share on this anniversary?

What everyone knows us for is our colourful scrubs that fit everybody, our excellent customer service and our story of how it all started. What many do not know is the team spirit that’s behind all this. We owe everything to our loyal customers, but equally to our dedicated team. A bunch of diverse, dedicated and slightly quirky people make the place a vibrant and supportive place to be!
